Trevor Hoffman

A University of Arizona alumnus, Hoffman converted from shortstop to pitcher in the minor leagues. He went on to record 601 saves, second all-time, and helped lead the San Diego Padres to the 1998 National League pennant. Hoffman spent 16 springs in the Cactus League with San Diego and Milwaukee.

Pat Hughes

A native of Tucson, Hughes has spent more than 40 years as a radio play-by-play announcer in the Cactus League. After a season with the Minnesota Twins, Hughes joined the Milwaukee Brewers’ radio crew in 1984, teaming with fellow Cactus League Hall of Famer Bob Uecker for 12 years. In 1996, Hughes moved to the Cubs’ booth, where he joined another Cactus League Hall of Famer, Ron Santo, and he has remained the North Siders’ radio play-by-play voice ever since.

Mike Murphy

Murphy worked for the San Francisco Giants from the time the club arrived on the West Coast after the 1957 season. Murphy started as a bat boy, and on his first day on the job he met a rising star named Willie Mays, who became a lifelong friend. Murphy soon became the home clubhouse manager, a position he held until his retirement following the 2022 season after 65 years with the club. The Giants’ clubhouse in Oracle Park is named for Murphy.

Ron Pies

Pies served as President of the Cactus League Baseball Association. He also chaired the Arizona Baseball Commission established by then-Arizona Governor Janet Napolitano. Pies was a strong advocate for Cactus League facility funding at a time when poor facilities threatened the existence of spring training in Arizona. Pies retired in 1998 as Tempe Director of Community Services after 30 years with the city.
